Carpet dealers sell and install wall-to-wall carpet: the material, the pad underneath, the tear-out of what's there now, and the install labor. Some are showroom operations, some are shop-at-home outfits that bring samples to your living room, and plenty of flooring stores do carpet alongside hard surfaces.
Carpet is one of the few home purchases where the unit math is deliberately slippery. Some quotes come per square foot, some per square yard (multiply by 9 to compare), some as 'installed' prices that bury the pad and labor, and some with 'free installation' that's simply baked into a higher material number. You can't shop carpet on the headline price. You shop it on the all-in number for your measured rooms, with the pad spec and the extras itemized.
What should you have ready before you call?
- Rough square footage of each room and a count of stairs, measured yourself so you can compare against their numbers
- What's on the floor now and who's removing it, since tear-out and haul-away are separate charges
- Your traffic reality: kids, pets, a home office chair rolling around, or a formal room nobody enters
- Whether you want the same carpet everywhere or different grades in bedrooms versus halls, which is a common way to save
- Budget framed as all-in dollars for the job, not per-square-foot, so the quote has to include pad and labor
- How much furniture needs moving and whether any of it is a piano, a waterbed, or electronics they may refuse to touch
- Timeline, because special-order carpet can take a few weeks while in-stock rolls can install within days
What should you ask before hiring? The 8-question script
This is your script. Nobody expects you to be an expert. Sound like someone who asks the right questions, and anyone good will answer all of these without flinching.
Yards versus feet is a 9x difference, and 'installed' means different things at different stores. Make every quote state material, pad, labor, tear-out, and haul-away separately.
The answer should sound like '8-pound, 7/16 rebond,' not 'our standard pad.' Pad is cheap to upgrade and is the difference between carpet that feels new for years and carpet that flattens out.
Waste is real, but it's also where padded measures hide. The seam diagram shows you where joints will land and lets you check their footage against your own.
Stain resistance sells carpet in the showroom. Crush resistance is what you live with. Polyester in a busy hallway mats down in a few years, and a straight answer here tells you the salesperson knows the product.
Power-stretching is the industry-standard method that prevents wrinkles and buckles down the road. Re-stretching later costs real money, so get the method committed up front.
Stairs are slow, skilled work billed per step. Wrapped (French cap) edges look better on open staircases and cost more. Surprise stair charges are a classic quote-to-invoice jump.
Most stores sub the install out. That's normal. What you want is the store standing behind seams, stretching, and transitions for at least a year, in writing, rather than pointing you to the subcontractor.

When you don't need to call anyone
We get paid when you call, so take this section as seriously as we do. Sometimes the honest answer is that you can handle it yourself or fix it cheaper first:
- If the carpet's problem is wrinkles, not wear, a re-stretch ($100-300 per room) buys years and costs a tenth of replacement.
- Localized damage like a burn or a bleach spot can often be patched with a remnant or a piece from a closet for far less than recarpeting the room.
- If you're recarpeting to fix smell, deal with the source first. New carpet over a urine-soaked subfloor is the most expensive air freshener there is.
- Selling the house soon? In-stock builder-grade installed cheaply usually returns more than premium carpet a buyer may rip out anyway.
How the carpet business works
The quote process starts with a measure. Carpet comes on 12-foot rolls (sometimes 13.5 or 15), so your rooms get mapped against roll widths, and waste is unavoidable. A fair measure runs maybe 5-15% over your raw floor area depending on layout and where seams land. A padded measure is one of the oldest tricks in flooring, so ask for the seam diagram and the total square footage, then sanity-check it against your own tape measure. You're allowed to ask why a 1,000 square foot job needs 1,300 feet of carpet.
Fiber choice drives both price and how the carpet lives. Nylon is the durability benchmark and resists matting in traffic lanes. Polyester (PET) costs less and resists stains well but crushes faster in hallways and on stairs. Triexta sits between them and carries strong stain performance. Wool is its own premium world. Within any fiber, density matters more than the 'face weight' number salespeople lean on: bend a sample backward, and if you can easily see the backing through the tufts, it's a thin product no matter what the label says.
The pad is where corners get cut, because you never see it again after install day. An 8-pound density rebond pad (7/16 inch is the common spec) protects mid-grade carpet and keeps it feeling good for years. A 5 or 6-pound pad under the same carpet wears everything out faster. Upgrading pad costs little compared to upgrading carpet, and it's usually the better dollar spent. Get the pad's density and thickness in writing on the quote.
The installed price hides several line items worth surfacing: tear-out and haul-away of old carpet, moving furniture, stairs (always priced separately, and labor-heavy), transition strips, and floor prep. Installers are usually subcontractors paid by the yard, which is why fast can beat careful. Power-stretching, where the carpet is mechanically stretched wall to wall rather than kicked in with a knee kicker, is what keeps carpet from wrinkling in three years. Ask for it by name.

- Quotes in square yards when everyone else quoted feet, hoping you won't convert. Multiply yards by 9 and compare honestly.
- 'Free installation' or 'free pad' promotions with material prices that mysteriously cover the gift
- A measure that runs 25% or more over your own math with no seam diagram to justify it
- No pad spec on the quote, just 'pad included'
- Pressure to sign today because 'this roll price expires.' In-stock rolls exist next week too.
- Vague answers about who installs and what happens if seams peak or the carpet wrinkles
- A big cash deposit demanded for in-stock product, rather than a reasonable deposit with balance on completion
